Summer 2024

Welcome back to the final term in Year 3. I hope that you have had a happy and restful Easter time together! Hopefully, the weather will be getting brighter and warmer so that we can to learn and play outside some more!

We have a very busy term ahead as we prepare for Year 4 as well as getting ready to take part in our First Holy Communion.

The following information should allow you an insight as to what we will be learning in Year 3. There are lots of fun and exciting things ahead!

English

Science
 

During the summer term, we will be learning about a range of different forces and magnetic attraction. We will also be looking at light, reflection and shadows with some exciting experiments!

History
This term we will be learning about our local area history, including where it all started, the origins of The Potteries, our past achievements and life in Stoke in the Victorian times.

Geography
This term we will be learning more widely about the World. We will explore volcanoes, how they erupt and where they are located and also the cause of earthquakes and where is most affected by them.

Art
This term we will be looking at art from different cultures and historical periods, and recreating our own pieces using new techniques, sketching and digital tools.

Design and Technology
We will be linking our designing skills to some science, using electrical circuits. We will also explore more recipes and food safety.

 

PE
We will be completing basketball and athletics this half term, and next half term we will be going swimming!
 

Computing
 

This term, we will be using information technology such as word processing as well as e-safety and programming units.

French
We will be learning how to name different instruments in French and how to talk about activities that we like doing.

RHE

We will be looking at how we belong to different communities, how we are connected to other people an the difference between rights and responsibilities. We will also explore a wide range of careers.

Spring 2024

We would like to begin by saying a huge Happy New Year to everybody! We hope you all had a warm and cosy Christmas, spending time with your nearest and dearest. Here’s to a new year, hoping 2024 brings you all good health and happiness.  After a very busy and successful Autumn Term, we are ready for round two at St George and St Martin’s, with a lot more fun and excitement waiting ahead. This newsletter will give you more information about what is going on in the classroom and what the children will be learning.

Science
This term we will be exploring plants, learning about how to care for them and what they need to survive. We will also explore pollination and seed dispersal, learning about the life cycle of plants!

History
We will be learning all about the Ancient Egyptians including mummies, Tutankhamun and Egyptian Gods.

Geography
This term in Geography we will be learning about Europe. We will explore some countries and capital cities, and then make a comparison between there and here, in rainy England!

Art
We will be taking inspiration from our class artist, Claude Monet, to explore painting skills. We will also explore art from other cultures.

Design and Technology
We will be learning about levers and leverages so that we can create our own mechanism for a moving toy. We will also revisit our learning about safety around food.

 

PE
We will be having some lessons with Mr Sigley again this term. He will be teaching us about Tag Rugby and all the benefits of getting up and moving! We will also be working on our gymnastics skills, dance and some team sports.

Computing
We will be using the Scratch programme to design a sequence of instructions including directions and also navigating the internet to comp-lete simple searches.

French

We will be continuing our learning in French, listening to French phrases, developing our speaking and         pronunciation and reading and writing simple phrases.

RHE

We will be looking at the idea of   belonging this term. We will think about what it means to belong to school, family and friends, and how we can help to make other people feel like they belong. We will also explore a wide range of careers.

Autumn 2023

Hello and welcome back to a brand new year at St George and St Martin’s. We are looking forward to a fantastic first term in Key Stage 2. We have many exciting things to learn in each of the subjects in our curriculum in Year 3. Below is a taster of some of the work we will be doing over the coming months…

Science
Our focus in science this half term will be Animals Including Humans, looking at food chains, diet and the skeletal system.

 

Next half term, our focus will be Rocks, we will discover different types of rocks, learn about soil formation and study the work of Mary Anning.

History
Our focus in History this term will be the changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will learn all about these prehistoric periods through themes such as chronology, society, beliefs and monuments.
Geography
This term in Geography we will be learning about the 8 compass points and the counties and cities in England. We will do lots of revision of previous years learning to consolidate        understanding.
Art
We will begin our work in Art by   looking at sketch work this term,   discovering how to express emotion in facial expressions as well as         developing the use of graded pencils.
Design and Technology
Our topic in Design and Technology this term is product packaging. We will look specifically at existing packaging design and use our maths and art skills in conjunction to design and produce nets for packaging.

 

 

PE
We begin this year in PE with lessons from Mr Sigley who will be covering Multi Skills

 

Other units covered this term will be Netball, Gymnastics and Health    Related Exercise.

 

Computing
Our first focus for this term in computing will be how to Create, store and retrieve digital content. This will have an emphasis on Word Processing skills.

 

We will also be looking at e-safety, including cyberbullying and safe communication online.

French
We begin our French learning this term with a focus on key vocabulary and basic conversation skills such as, days of the week, colours, saying hello and introducing ourselves.
RHE

 

We will look at friendships this term, exploring how we are all different in lots of ways, but if we work together with kindness we can have great relationships. We will also learn about our bodies, how we don’t have to look the same but we have to show each other respect.
