Introduction
Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. During daily phonics lessons, the children are taught to recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes and blend these sounds together to make words.
At St George and St Martin, we want all of our children to become fluent readers who have a lifelong love of reading. Children are taught the essential skills needed to read through daily systematic synthetic phonics lessons. We follow ‘Phonics Bug’, which is a fast-paced DfE approved programme. The programme is interactive and the children have daily opportunities to revisit and consolidate previous learning.
